Labidochromis ianthinus can only be found near the Mbenji Islands and Nkhomo Reef. Mainly they are living there between small rocks but they were also spotted above the sandbottom in the intermediate zones from rocks to sand. In the lake the males of these species can grow to 8 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 10 cm, females grow to about 8 cm. Labidochromis ianthinus is a fairly small lasting species which you can keep best with multiple females and other mbuna in an aquarium with a lot of hiding places. This is one of the most peaceful small cichlids of the lake, mutual and against other species they are quite tolerant. In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with invertebrates like little insects and small lobster-likes which they find on the rocks and on the sandbottom. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. |
